Capezzana Barco Reale di Carmignano 2006

Carmignano is an Italian wine region located in the Tuscany region and centered around the city of Carmignano, about 10 miles (16 kilometers) northwest of Florence and were know for creating “Super Tuscan” wines before they became en vouge.   I was so excited to try this wine from this special region.

I am making an assumption that this wine could have been a little corked judging by the continuous dank flavor in the mid palate venturing all the way through the finish, but this wine as a whole was extremely unbalanced and had a rugged tannin that was very unpleasant.  On a good note, this wine did have a nice bouquet of musk and violets and some rich flavors of dark chocolate, tobacco and toasted oak, but for the most part, this wine was extremely disappointing.  Keep Drinking and Keep Believing.

Pedroncelli Dry Creek Valley Merlot Bench Vineyards 2009

Soft, easy sipping with wonderfully balanced flavors of vanilla, ripe red raspberries and cherries with a hint of nutmeg.  Paired absolutely perfect with our grilled Balsamic Vinaigrette marinated chicken breasts and a magnificent buy for $15.  Keep Drinking and Keep Believing.

2 up Shiraz 2004

Medium bodied with flavors of rustic earth, gunflint, plum, dark plump cherries, dark chocolate and a huge clay component, this Australian Shiraz has a lengthy finish of toasted oak and red apple. A very good value at $10.99.   Keep Drinking and Keep Believing.

Chime Cellars Sonoma County 2009 Pinot Noir

Saw this Pinot Noir on sale for $16.99 and noticed it had gotten “91 points” in The Wine Enthusiast,  which says to me that it was a very good value, or they spent alot of money in advertising.

From the moment I opened this wine, I loved the nose, as it lent wonderful aromas of ripe red cherries and raspberries, crisp juicy fruit, mint with a slight undertone of milk chocolate.  With a nice moderately lean mouthfeel and not overly thick like some California Pinots; I thought this wine was well on it’s way to being the ultimate steal, but was disappointed how thin the wine became after 15 minutes of being aerated.   Keep Drinking and Keep Believing.

Magness Merlot 2007

Scored this Napa Valley Merlot for a little under $13 on sale and thought the wine was pretty typical of lower price point California Merlots.  Mild and easy sipping with flavors of toasted oak, clove, vanilla, ripe raspberries and cherries, this wine is perfect with a slight chill if you are looking for something to kick back with on the back porch after a long day, or serve for undiscerning guests. I feel it is a good value at $12, but not as much at $18 or over.  Keep Drinking and Believing.

Pendulum 2006 Red Wine

Medium body with flavors of tobacco, black licorice and limited dark fruit, this Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot blend falls a tad flat;  Fear not and Keep Drinking and Keep Believing.

Big Fish 2007 Dry Creek Valley Zinfandel

Happy Monday to all and hope everyone had an outstanding Weekend!   What an awesome Summer so far and tasting this massive Zinfandel from Big Fish Wines last night just made things that much better.

Out of the gates this Zin was riveting lending a seductive bouquet of toasted vanilla, dill and concentrated gobs of hedonistic fruit that would have the power to seduce even the most stubborn of cynics. Rich, refined and with glorious depth and polished smooth tannin, this Zin by a landslide is one of the best Zins i have ever tasted with a consistency and finish that keeps rewarding the blessed sip after sip.  Keep Drinking and Keep Believing.

B.R. Cohn 2008 North Coast Silver Label

2 years ago my Attorney and I were taking a tour through Sonoma and came across B.R Cohn’s tasting room where we were greeted with such snootiness and pretentious prestige that i immediately became nauseous and had to turn around and walk out to relieve myself upon their well manicured lawn; ( Now back to the Present.)

So years have past and i still have a chip on my shoulder towards the “People in question” but my work is my work and wine is my buisness, which brings us to my thoughts on B.R Cohn’s  2008 North Coast Silver Label Cabernet Sauvignon I procured several nights back.

The bouquet on this multi faceted Cab has seductive aromas of vanilla extract, all spice, cassis, red currant, dark luscious cherries, musk, toasted oak with a faint lingering character of  Bordeaux earth.  Medium bodied and exceptionally refined for the price point, this wine offers fullfilling flavors of ripe red cherries, inviting amounts of juicy fruit, with pleasing leather and rustic notes and a smooth vanilla finish.

I yearned all the way deep down to my Soul to trash this wine, defame it from head to toe and then leave it to lick its wounds, but to no avail.  THE PROOF IS IN THE PUDDING and this California Cab is absolutely without a doubt one of the best wines in it’s price range !   Keep Drinking and Keep Believing.

Dona Paula Estate 2009 Malbec

Wonderful Malbec with lime zest, blackberries, wheat, damp earth, menthol and toasty oak on the nose and a glorious deep purple hue. Not your typical Malbec with it’s sharpness and raw rustic flavors, but nonetheless, thumbs up except for the moderately rugged oak influence and underrefined finish.  Keep Drinking and Keep Believing.

The Prisoner from Orin Swift

Happy Friday to all and hope everyone has wonderful plans for the Weekend!  I am writing this excerpt to give my 2 cents on a wine they call “The Prisoner” by Orin Swift.   This is the second time I have been conned into buying this wine after person after person, who have all somehow been brainwashed by Extraterrestrial beings, are convinced “The Prisoner” is the second coming;  I am going to cut to the chase on this topic.   “The Prisoner” is a nauseating fruit bomb that has so much infested oak influence that it reeks like a big block of rancid wood.   Why so much oak?  What does “The Prisoner” have to hide?

This is absolutely the most overrated wine on the market at almost $40 a bottle, but if you do chose to try Orin Swift wines, try his Saldo Zinfandel for the same price point.  It is absolutely an awesome, rich, full bodied Zin and will not disappoint.  Keep Believing and Keep Drinking.
