2007 Cameron Hughes Lot 173

I just had a bottle of the Cameron Hughes Lot 173 Cabernet Sauvignon from Sonoma County with a friend and even though it is not as complex and balanced as some of the other recent Cameron Hughes wines i’ve had, this wine still has alot to offer.   Armed with a seductive deep red hue and luscious amounts of sweet berries, this wine even though simple and straightforward, is quite refreshing and flavorful.   Keep Believing and Keep Drinking.

2006 Merkin Vineyard Chupacabra California Red Blend

Scored this California Red Blend produced by Maynard James Keenan from the legendary band TOOL at World Market and it is an absolute steal at $11.99 a bottle with a superb bouquet of sweet berries, perfume, rose petals and absolutely stellar balance throughout. I definitely suggest scoring a case of this awesome wine before it is gone forever!   Keep Believing and Keep Drinking.

2005 Saint~Jacques de Siran

This Bordeaux Superior has outstanding amounts of concentrated dark cherry, juicy fruit, blueberry, vanilla extract followed by a faint touch of musk and eucalyptus. Smooth, easy sipping, and even though much more fruit forward than most Bordeauxs, i enjoyed this wine throughly, especially how expressive the Cabernet Franc was within the blend.   Keep Believing and Keep Drinking.

2009 Byron Pinot Noir

Celebrated my dear friend Doug Blaheta’s 39th Birthday at The Rokerij in Phoenix, Arizona and enjoyed a couple bottles of the 2009 Byron Pinot Noir.  This Pinot Noir from Santa Barbara County has a refreshing bouquet of fresh red cheeries, rose petals, sweet bark with a faint pleasant linger of perfume that is very easy sipping, simple and a good Summertime red.  Keep Believing and Keep Drinking.

2005 La Fleur de Bouard

This Right Bank Bordeaux from Lalande-de-Pomerol  consists of 85% Merlot 10% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon has a thick dark hue with a bouquet of rich earth, cigarbox, and deep, dark concentrated seductive fruit.  Medium, tight, smooth tannin, great density and superb mouthfeel, i wish i had a case or two of this magnificiant wine!  Keep Believing and Keep Drinking.

One Hope Zinfandel

Scored this medium bodied 2008 One Hope Zinfandel for $7.50 and for a straightforward Summertime Red it is pleasant with rich cherry and strawberry notes with nuances of clove and vanilla.   Not an outstanding wine by any stretch, but i think it is much better and had alot more integrity than most of the other Zins i have had over the past several months that were double the price.  Keep Believing and Keep Drinking.

Margerum Wine Company

After starting out my day at The magnificent Santa Barbara Shellfish Company, I made my way to Ancapa Street finding the embracing Margerum Wine Company.

From the minute I entered The Margerum Wine Company’s tasting room, I had the feeling this was going to be the fantastic afternoon as the combination of Santa Barbara’s angelic vibe of solace and perfect weather intertwined with the thought of tasting some great wines, sounded like  a one way ticket to Heaven.

” How’s it going today?”    I was greeted inside Margerum Wine Company’s Tasting Room by a wonderfully pleasant, laid back Wine Guru who immediately made me feel welcome, attentive to my every need.

After a couple minute taking  in our pleasing surroundings,  I chose to have a glass of the  Margerum 2005 Syrah, being that I had heard that The Rhone Varieties were Santa Barbara’s forte.

This by far has to be one of the best American Syrahs I have had with rounded concentrated offerings of Boysenberry and Blackberries, smooth mild tannin, and undertone of rich earth with a tinge of black licorce.  So refreshing to taste an American Syrah that doesn’t taste young and green;  The only thing I could have wished from this wine was it holding a little bit firmer in the mid palate and to have had a longer of finish, but nonetheless, a very pleasant wine with wonderful integrity.

Starting to feel the part and let all of my worries fall by the wayside, I made my way to my second selection; A Modern Day California Super Tuscan 2001 Vita Nova Reservatum consisting of 45% Sangiovese,  33% Cabernet Franc and 22% Merlot.

For someone besides the Italians to attempt a blend like this seems like a suicide mission, but to my surprise, the wine comes off quite well with a pleasing rustic bouquet of dried earth, baked cranberries, red cherries and raspberries.   My only knock on this wine is how rugged the tannin was and unfortunately long term, i don’t feel it is the type of  tannin that will soften and smooth itself out entirely.

The third and final wine I tried on my visit to Margerum Wine Company was my favorite wine of the day, A 2002 Santa Marie Valley Au Bon Climat  “Knox Valley”  Estate Bottled Pinot Noir; (  Try and say that all in one breath.)

This impressive Pinot Noir comes off very Burgundian and has a seductive aroma of sweet bark, ripe red cherries and raspberries with pristine acidity and a peaceful finish; (  If i were a richer man I would have been walking out of M.W.C with every single last bottle of this! )     🙂

Granted,  i wasn’t able to walk out of Margerum Wine Company with case upon case of all of their fine wines, but i did walk out of Margerum Wine Company feeling fullfilled, happy, enlightened and treated first class.

One Hope Cabernet Sauvignon

Just opened a bottle of 2008 One Hope Cabernet Sauvignon and for a fruit forward Cabernet, it is a good buy for the 9-10$ price point.  This wine with a slight chill has a pleasing bouquet of powdered cherries that reminds me of The Blackstone Reserve Sonoma Coast Cabernet and with soft simple fruit throughout, the One Hope Cabernet Sauvignon is consistent, straightforward, and easy sipping; ( Plus they give half of their proceeds to charitable causes such as Our Troops, The Environment, Autism, and Breast Cancer so how can you go wrong.)    P.S:  If you dig the vibe, please supoort Independent Music and download my new album “Greatest and Otherwise”  Links are to the right of the page.  🙂

Trivento Select 2007 Syrah

Scored this wine for .99 cents a bottle on clearance and it retails for $17.   I figure i can’t go wrong and pour some through an aerator and am immediately hit with moderate amounts of dill on the nose from the American Oak, a tinge of pleasing perfume and a harmony of concentrated blueberries, blackberries, boysenberries, Concord grapes and dried figs.  Good mouthfeel with a slight hint of Earth in the mid palate, this Argentian wine even at $10 would be an absolute steal!    Cheers and keep believin and for the Love of Liberace, KEEP DRINKING!

2008 Los Vascos Cabernet Sauvignon

Just wanted to send out a shout about the Barons De Rothschild Los Vascos Cabernet from Chile.   This wine for an everyday wine at $9 a bottle is stellar.   Medium bodied with a hint of soil and consistent flavors of red and dark cherry, this wine is a standbye for me and never disappoints.  Keep Believing and Keep Drinking.
