Capezzana Barco Reale di Carmignano 2006


Carmignano is an Italian wine region located in the Tuscany region and centered around the city of Carmignano, about 10 miles (16 kilometers) northwest of Florence and were know for creating “Super Tuscan” wines before they became en vouge.   I was so excited to try this wine from this special region.

I am making an assumption that this wine could have been a little corked judging by the continuous dank flavor in the mid palate venturing all the way through the finish, but this wine as a whole was extremely unbalanced and had a rugged tannin that was very unpleasant.  On a good note, this wine did have a nice bouquet of musk and violets and some rich flavors of dark chocolate, tobacco and toasted oak, but for the most part, this wine was extremely disappointing.  Keep Drinking and Keep Believing.

Soft, easy sipping with wonderfully balanced flavors of vanilla, ripe red raspberries and cherries with a hint of nutmeg.  Paired absolutely perfect with our grilled Balsamic Vinaigrette marinated chicken breasts and a magnificent buy for $15.  Keep Drinking and Keep Believing.

2 up Shiraz 2004


Medium bodied with flavors of rustic earth, gunflint, plum, dark plump cherries, dark chocolate and a huge clay component, this Australian Shiraz has a lengthy finish of toasted oak and red apple. A very good value at $10.99.   Keep Drinking and Keep Believing.

Chime Cellars Sonoma County 2009 Pinot Noir


Saw this Pinot Noir on sale for $16.99 and noticed it had gotten “91 points” in The Wine Enthusiast,  which says to me that it was a very good value, or they spent alot of money in advertising.

From the moment I opened this wine, I loved the nose, as it lent wonderful aromas of ripe red cherries and raspberries, crisp juicy fruit, mint with a slight undertone of milk chocolate.  With a nice moderately lean mouthfeel and not overly thick like some California Pinots; I thought this wine was well on it’s way to being the ultimate steal, but was disappointed how thin the wine became after 15 minutes of being aerated.   Keep Drinking and Keep Believing.

Margerum Wine Company


After starting out my day at The magnificent Santa Barbara Shellfish Company, I made my way to Ancapa Street finding the embracing Margerum Wine Company.

From the minute I entered The Margerum Wine Company’s tasting room, I had the feeling this was going to be the fantastic afternoon as the combination of Santa Barbara’s angelic vibe of solace and perfect weather intertwined with the thought of tasting some great wines, sounded like  a one way ticket to Heaven.

” How’s it going today?”    I was greeted inside Margerum Wine Company’s Tasting Room by a wonderfully pleasant, laid back Wine Guru who immediately made me feel welcome, attentive to my every need.

After a couple minute taking  in our pleasing surroundings,  I chose to have a glass of the  Margerum 2005 Syrah, being that I had heard that The Rhone Varieties were Santa Barbara’s forte.

       This by far has to be one of the best American Syrahs I have had with rounded concentrated offerings of Boysenberry and Blackberries, smooth mild tannin, and undertone of rich earth with a tinge of black licorce.  So refreshing to taste an American Syrah that doesn’t taste young and green;  The only thing I could have wished from this wine was it holding a little bit firmer in the mid palate and to have had a longer of finish, but nonetheless, a very pleasant wine with wonderful integrity.

Starting to feel the part and let all of my worries fall by the wayside, I made my way to my second selection; A Modern Day California Super Tuscan 2001 Vita Nova Reservatum consisting of 45% Sangiovese,  33% Cabernet Franc and 22% Merlot.

     For someone besides the Italians to attempt a blend like this seems like a suicide mission, but to my surprise, the wine comes off quite well with a pleasing rustic bouquet of dried earth, baked cranberries, red cherries and raspberries.   My only knock on this wine is how rugged the tannin was and unfortunately long term, i don’t feel it is the type of  tannin that will soften and smooth itself out entirely.

The third and final wine I tried on my visit to Margerum Wine Company was my favorite wine of the day, A 2002 Santa Marie Valley Au Bon Climat  “Knox Valley”  Estate Bottled Pinot Noir; (  Try and say that all in one breath.)

       This impressive Pinot Noir comes off very Burgundian and has a seductive aroma of sweet bark, ripe red cherries and raspberries with pristine acidity and a peaceful finish; (  If i were a richer man I would have been walking out of M.W.C with every single last bottle of this! )     🙂

Granted,  i wasn’t able to walk out of Margerum Wine Company with case upon case of all of their fine wines, but i did walk out of Margerum Wine Company feeling fullfilled, happy, enlightened and treated first class.

2008 Los Vascos Cabernet Sauvignon


Just wanted to send out a shout about the Barons De Rothschild Los Vascos Cabernet from Chile.   This wine for an everyday wine at $9 a bottle is stellar.   Medium bodied with a hint of soil and consistent flavors of red and dark cherry, this wine is a standbye for me and never disappoints.  Keep Believing and Keep Drinking.

Santa Barbara Shellfish Company


What an absolutely awesome time spending last week in Ventura and probably one of the highlights was having my dear friend Tiffiany taking me to Santa Barbara and visiting  the “Santa Barbara Shellfish Company” for lunch at the end of Sterns Wharf.

From the get go, I knew it was going to be a spectacular afternoon as Lady T and I were the first to enter Santa Barbara Shellfish Company’s  tiny but “Full of Life” space, being graced by “Led Zeppelin I”  pleasantly blaring and greated by Captain Diego; who is of Brazilian descent but talks like a Bostonian that lives to watch the Boston Red Sox and kick some wicked ass.

Such a positive energy Captain Diego exuded, making you smile from the  inside out as Captain D, sharing info about Santa Barbara Shellfish Company’s outstanding menu, his colorful Life and some of the local wines;  Nursing a frosty Anchor Steam at S.B.S.C’s Old School wooden bar, I decided to go with The New England Clam Chowder Sourdough bowl and Lady T the Crab legs.

Born and raised outside of Boston, I have to say that Santa Barbara Shellfish Company’s own special recipe New England Clam Chowder is some of the best chowder I have ever had and after a bite of  Lady T’s delectable Crab leg lunch laced with butter and a perfect amount of sweetness; it truly seals the deal that i am living a perfect moment and everyone that get’s to Santa Barbara, AKA Heaven on Earth,  must treat themselves and experience Santa Barbara Shellfish Company.

” We were here last night and are back again.”    Exclaims two patrons happily aimed Captain Diego’s way, as Lady T and I wave our farewell on our way out into the glorious day to explore things further.  Cheers

Domaine ” La Garrigue” 2005- Cotes Du Rhone


Got this medium bodied, moderate tannin wine at a shop in Goodyear, AZ and am confused about a specific detail.  Even though this wine is referred to as a ” Cotes Du Rhone” with a blend of  65% Grenache, 25% Mourvedre, and 10% Syrah, why does the cork lead me to believe this was bottled and has something to do with Appellation Vacqueyas?    Kind of conflicting being that Vacqueyas has been graced it’s own Appellation since 1990 and is no longer regarded as a Cotes Du Rhone and is more heavier Syrah based than Grenache based? Nevertheless, this consistent Cotes Du Rhone has subtle hints of lavender, unsweetened black licorice and a nice frequency of subtle damp earth.  A sturdy Cotes Du Rhone even with all the conflicting, ambiguous information from the cork and overly worded label.  Keep Believing and Keep Drinking.

Ehlers Merlot


Scored this bottle of 2005 Ehler’s Merlot from St Helena for $20 and was absolutely blown away by what i found. With about 15% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc, this full bodied Meritage blend with a quick zip of herbaceousness in the front pallet is not for the faint hearted. Chewy and filled with flavors of dense cherry, raspberry and blackberry, promising firm smooth tannin in the mid palate that will be perfect in another 2 years and a perfect hint of right bank earth on the nose, even with a just semi memorable finish, this wine for $20 is absolutely massive!   Keep Believing and Keep Drinking.
